On Saturday, 23 July 2022, the two thermal portals of the San Bernardino tunnel on the A13 went into operation. We were entrusted with the project planning for this.
From 2018 to 2021, our engineers prepared the feasibility studies and project plans for the new thermal portals. After the Gotthard Tunnel, the San Bernardino Tunnel is the second Swiss road tunnel to receive such a safety system.
On the one hand, vehicle-specific characteristics such as length, height and width, vehicle class and speed are recorded. In parallel, the surface temperature is measured using two infrared cameras and combined with the vehicle data to form a 3D thermal image. Using AI approaches, these images are evaluated for potentially overheated areas on the vehicle. In this way, vehicles at risk of catching fire can be intercepted before entering the tunnel - the safety risk is thus massively reduced.
