Description

The goal of the "Linth 2000" project is to protect the plains between Näfels/Mollis and the Obersee (Lake Zurich) from flooding (outburst floods and dam breaches). The existing hydraulic engineering facilities of the Linthwerk are to be comprehensively overhauled so that a hundred-year flood can be discharged without damage. More extreme flood events can also be handled without causing extensive damage. The project required a comprehensive geotechnical rehabilitation of the current dams over long stretches and an improvement in accessibility for maintenance and intervention. The parallel side channels were relocated to the outside in places and revitalised. In addition, the river habitat is being widened through various measures: River widening, connection of old channels, newly created watercourse sections, creation of reed beds and floodplains, and removal of the longitudinal shoring in places.
The rigid channel geometry is broken up in places by widening and wider river sections. It was important to ensure that the historical and landscape value was not lost. Together with ecological improvements, the project guarantees the function of the Linth plain as a settlement area, agricultural area, holiday region and transit country. The recreational value of the Linth region is enhanced by the newly created varied structures.
