As part of the A8 Interlaken Ost-Brienz maintenance project, extensive testing of the safety systems in the Giessbach tunnel took place on 3 February. It was successfully confirmed that a supposed fire in the tunnel initiated all the planned safety systems as planned: the fire alarm cable triggered the desired fire alarm; the signalling system closed the tunnel; the ventilation system (ventilation flaps, exhaust fans, jet fans) was activated; the escape route signalling system (emergency lighting, green flashing beacons to the safety tunnel) was put into operation; the rescue centre of the Canton of Bern was alerted and the video surveillance system automatically switched on the surveillance cameras at the police operations centre that were closest to the assumed source of the fire.
